Room Reservation: Timeline issue with JAWS screen reader

Service Area(s): Library Services

Disruption Time: Wednesday, August 16, 3:50pm (ongoing)

Description

The following problem has been detected with the JAWS screen reader, version 2023.2307.37.400 and JAWS version 2024.2312.53.400.  It does not appear with VoiceOver or NVDA.

When navigating the room reservation table using table navigation in JAWS, in some situations, the JAWS PC cursor is bumped to the adjacent room column.

For example, If you are in the column for room 607 and step down you will hear the time slot for that room. However, if the adjacent room 605 room has a reservation at the same time, then the screen reader cursor will automatically be bumped from room 607 to the column for room 705.

This does not happen when navigating the table with the down key.

Alternatives

One option is to try to navigate the problematic areas of the table with the down and up keys.

Another is to contact the User Services staff by phone to reserve a room 548-889-3766

Reason

This appears to be a bug with JAWS 2023. The issue doesn't happen in JAWS 2022.

Disruption Duration

Unknown. We've reported the bug to Freedom Scientific. An improvement was found in the JAWS version 2023.2311.34.400 release, however problems persist in complex tables.
