This research guide is created to help researchers locate statistics and data on entrepreneurship, innovation, as well as firm growth in startups, scaleups, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Canada

Business Counts

Semi-annual data since June 2015 on Canadian business counts, location counts with employees (by employment size) and without employees, by North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), for Canada and provinces. Click "Add/Remove data" button, select the items of interest under "Customize table", and click Apply. Click "Download options" to export data.

Digital Economy and Society Statistics

Provides links to data from Statistics Canada on Cyber security and cybercrime, E-commerce, ICT sector, Internet use, Telecom, Digital economy and society. Select a category under "Find data on". On the results page, use filters on the left-side panel to select data type and geography, or enter keywords into the search box to find specific data.

Entrepreneurship Indicators Database

Provides annual data for 2011- 2013 describing the dynamics of a subset of Canadian enterprises, such as the number of active enterprises; the number of births and deaths of active enterprises; the number of jobs associated with enterprise births and deaths; the survival of newly created enterprises; and the number of high-growth enterprises and gazelles. The data for 2018 are not publically available, but some highlights and infographics would be helpful.

Information and Communication Technologies Used

Contains data for 2019 on information and communication technologies used by industry and size of enterprises. Click "Add/Remove data" button, select the items of interest under "Customize table", and click Apply. Click "Download options" to export data.

Investment Scale up and Clean Growth

Data from Innovation, Science and Economic Development, including number of high-growth companies (2011-2015); firm entry and exit rates (2000-2017); total early-stage entrepreneurial activity by country (2014 and 2017); age composition of small firms (2001-2011); start-up ecosystems in global top 20 (2017); and ease of doing business index (2018).

SME Research and Statistics

Provides access to detailed data on Canadian SMEs such as key small business statistics, financial performance data, and survey data and analysis. Specifically, Survey data and analysis contains data from bi-annual survey of business financing, credit conditions survey, and survey on financing/growth of SMEs. SME research reports and statistics are available by date.

Financial Performance Data presents financial data for SMEs in more than 1000 industries in Canada, including more than 30 performance benchmarks, with an option to include your own income statement and balance sheet information in the report. Consult this research guide on how to create a report for a specific industry.

PitchBook

This resource is a private equity and venture capital database covering a wide range of firms as well as startups. Users must create a personal user account on Pitchbook with their Laurier email address following instructions under Access Requirement. These accounts are deleted every year on June 30th and need to be recreated. Within Pitchbook, "Help Center" at the top right corner provides tutorials on how to run basic and advanced searches.

USA

Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs (ASE)

Provided by U.S. Census Bureau, ASE collects statistics on the characteristics of businesses and their owners. Data are presented by gender, ethnicity, race, and veteran status for the United States by 2-digit 2012 NAICS, states, the top 50 metropolitan statistical areas, employment size, receipts size, and number of years in business.

Business Dynamics Statistics (BDS)

Provided by U.S. Census Bureau, BDS provides annual measures of business dynamics, such as job creation and destruction, establishment births and deaths, and firm startups and shutdowns for the economy and aggregated by establishment and firm characteristics.

Business Employment Dynamics (BED)

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) collects data on new businesses and job creation, including the number of new business establishments, the number of jobs created by establishments less than 1 year old, survival rates of establishments, births and deaths, and employment by firm size.

Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey (BERD)

Available at National Science Foundation, BERD provides data on research and development performed or funded by businesses within the United States. Click "See all [+]" to see all data tables.

Data Resources (Overview)

The Kauffman Foundation creates data overviews that provide guidance on how to use certain datasets in entrepreneurship. It collects a list of data sources and entrepreneurship databases, including statistics from U.S. Bureau of Labor, U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Federal Reserve, and the World Bank. Please note that some of the listed resources are not freely available through Laurier Library subscriptions.

EU Startups Database

Provides listing of startups with links to their website and general information, such as name, country and city where it is based, industry, business description, and year of being founded.

International

Entrepreneurship and Business Statistics

Available from OECD, the Enterprise Statistics covers Structural and Demographic Business Statistics (SDBS), Timely Indicators of Entrepreneurship, and Indicators of female entrepreneurship. SDBS includes statistics on enterprise birth rate, enterprise death rate, high growth enterprises, etc. Timely Indicators of Entrepreneurship include new creations, bankruptcies, and exits of enterprises. Data are available on annual or quarterly basis. Click on the Customise button above each data table to select country, time, indicator, and other items.

Entrepreneurial Framework and Behaviour Data

Adult Population Survey (APS) looks at the characteristics, motivations and ambitions of individuals starting businesses, as well as social attitudes towards entrepreneurship. National Expert Survey (NES) looks at the national context in which individuals start businesses. Click the Custom Data Tables button and select economy, indicator and year to get the data. The full datasets are made available to the public 3 years after data collection. Click Full Data Sets button to download APS datasets at individual and national level (1999-2017).
