Screen readers: An introduction

Digital information should be accessible to everyone. Screen readers are one of many tools used by blind people to access computers, websites, journal articles and eBooks (other tools include magnification software and braille displays).
While screen readers are important, many sighted people have never had a chance to try one or learn they work. As a result, we may hold misconceptions about these incredible technologies (for example, screen readers don't actually read the screen).
Drawing on the library website and library resources as examples, this event will offer a friendly introduction to screen readers, including what they do, how they differ from visual computer, and the role they play in digital accessibility. Whether you are sighted, blind, low-vision, student, faculty, staff, or member of the wider community, you are encouraged to come and learn about these amazing technologies!
Hosted by Mark Weiler, a sighted librarian who is certified with the JAWS screen reader.
